日本語では「虐殺」という一語で議論されがちだが、英語ではテーマによって、atrocity（アトロシティ）、massacre（マサカー）、genocide（ジェノサイド）と分けられ日本ほどの混乱はない。アトロシティは非人道的な虐殺で主に戦闘・戦争による残虐行為、マサカーは流血・殺害の事態性である。この2つの単語は見方によって使い分けられることもある。南京大虐殺は、”Nanking atrocities”とも”Nanking massacre”と呼ばれる。天安門事件は、その流血の惨事の面では、”Tiananmen massacre”と呼ばれるが、”Tiananmen atrocities”と呼ばれることは少ない。

　これに対して、ジェノサイドは特定の民族を狙った殺害で、近代的には政府が関与した組織的な虐殺が問われる。ジェノサイドは局面においては、マサカーでもあるが、その本質ではない。
　この区別は日本人には難しいようだ。映画「ホテル・ルワンダ（Hotel Rwanda）」（参照）が公開されたおり、映画の元になった出来事を指して、これを遠いアフリカの出来事として観ても意味がなく日本人なら関東大震災の朝鮮人虐殺事件を想起すべきだと評した映画評論家がいたが、流血の惨事を強調したあの映画なのでそうした印象を与えてしまうのはしかたがない。だが、ルワンダ虐殺(Rwandan genocide)の本質は、ジェノサイドにあり、ジェノサイドとしての構図をきちんと理解することが重要になる（参照）。
