  かつて宮本常一が日本各地を歩きながら撮った10万枚の写真に度肝を抜かれた森山大道は、それら10万枚の写真は、誰もが目を奪われ時代を特徴づけるような「突出した出来事」には目もくれず、それらとは正反対の、いわばその裏側の「突出していない日本の場所を全部埋めている」と語った。つまり、今ではほとんどすべて忘れられた「日本人の」日常の暮らしの細部。

  また森山大道は、それら10万枚の写真は、圧倒的に徹底的に「通過者の視点」であることを強調した。宮本常一は圧倒的に徹底的に「通過者」だった、と。「物狂いが日本中、巡っているという感じ」とまで評した。たしかに、宮本常一は無常観のなかで旅や念仏そのものを「住処」とするような俳人やある種の僧のごとく歩き続ける人生を送った。郷里といわれる山口県周防大島には定住したわけではなかった。
