  信じようと、信じまいと―
  
  日本の有名な怪談『番町皿屋敷』に酷似した話が、イギリス北西部の旧家に伝わっている。
  カップを割った咎で井戸に投げ込まれたメイドが幽霊となり、夜毎カップを数えては、数が足りないことを嘆く。
  筋書きは日本の物と大差ないが、このメイドが「足りない」と嘆くカップの個数は、年月と共に、少しずつ増えているらしい。
  ドジなメイドは、死んでからも時々カップを割っている。と、結んで、地元では笑い話として語られている。
