Tour de France 2012 | Stage 14

Cadel’s day: punctured at the top of the final climb, no team cars permitted as the route was too narrow, no near neutral service cars, and no teammates. Tejay Vangarderen, riding beside Cadel, did not stop despite shouts from his leader (another topic to debate!). On-hand soigneur has only moral support and bidons to offer.

First teammate to arrive - Steve Cummings - also has a rear-wheel puncture and so now there two BMC riders stranded at the top of the climb. Finally friends arrive and Moinard’s rear wheel is commandeered and off Cadel goes. Then he punctures again. And a third time. The only amusing part being team boss Jim Ochowicz slipping comedy-fashion into a ditch twice.

The peloton waited up (second controversial topic!) until Cadel was back with the pack. Afterwards a clearly frustrated Cadel lamented his three punctures stating it was “protesters or some kind-hearted people trying to ruin my season”.

Bad day for the defending champion.
